Mumbai, India’s business hub, is back in the limelight as it welcomes the India Maritime Week 2025, a prestigious forum for the convergence of blue economy leaders, global CEOs, and policy makers to shape the destiny of the blue economy. The star of the event, Maritime Leaders Conclave, is being spoken to by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who stressed India’s vision to become a global maritime leader and a critical connection in global trade and logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hosted by the Bombay Exhibition Centre, the conclave has seen participation from leading executives of international shipping lines, port operators, logistics majors, and delegations from over 40 countries. The talks are likely to address a whole gamut of issues \u2014 ranging from green shipping and port digitalization to coastal security, trade infrastructure, and blue economy growth strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
PM Modi emphasized in his keynote speech that the maritime industry is at the heart of India’s economic vision in the “Viksit Bharat 2047” paradigm. The Prime Minister said more than 95% of Indian trade by volume and almost 70% by value is through the seas and hence it was crucial for India to upgrade ports, make logistics seamless, and improve coastal connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“India’s vision at sea is not merely about ports \u2014 it is about people, prosperity, and progress,” the Prime Minister stated, declaring that India plans to double its port capacity by 2030 while moving towards net-zero carbon operations by 2070. He also pointed to the Sagarmala and Maritime India Vision 2030 initiatives as two principal pillars of this change, with a focus on creating smart ports, inland waterways, and green shipping corridors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event also witnessed the inauguration of a number of new initiatives \u2014 such as a National Maritime Innovation and Start-up Hub to encourage research in autonomous shipping, marine robotics, and AI-enabled port logistics. The initiative, facilitated by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, will seek to build a partnership between the government, private industry, and academia with the objective of promoting innovation in the maritime sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the key sessions of the conclave, the Global Maritime CEO Forum, discussed opportunities for India in emerging as a transshipment and bunkering center in South Asia. With the development of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and future facilities close to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, leaders in the industry were agreed that Mumbai was strategically located to be a global maritime gateway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement, Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal pointed out that India’s coastal and inland waterways could add as much as $100 billion to the GDP by 2035. “We are not constructing mere infrastructure, but a logistics ecosystem which will determine India’s trade resilience,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The conclave’s agenda also incorporated a session on green energy transition with Japanese, Norwegian, and Singaporean companies presenting hydrogen-fueled vessel prototypes and electric port cranes. This sits well with India’s larger climate objectives and bolsters its pledges to sustainable industrial development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Outside the conference venues, the city saw increased security arrangements, particularly in western suburbs like Goregaon and Andheri, where the Prime Minister’s movements were focussed. There were restrictions on traffic on many routes, and the Mumbai Police asked commuters to take alternative roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local businesses in the hospitality and transport sectors reported a surge in demand, with hotels near the event venue operating at nearly full capacity. Tourism boards also took the opportunity to showcase Mumbai\u2019s maritime heritage \u2014 from the Gateway of India to the Maritime Museum at Ballard Estate \u2014 under the \u201cSea & Spirit of Mumbai\u201d campaign launched alongside the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Experts are of the opinion that India Maritime Week 2025 will potentially open the doors to long-term foreign collaborations and investments in logistics and port facilities. “The momentum created here will define India’s maritime growth path for the next decade,” stated Anil Bhasin, CEO of GlobalPorts Consortium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the conclave progresses, discussions are expected to move towards actionable frameworks for private-public partnerships, with a focus on coastal employment generation, digital trade facilitation, and blue finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a city built on trade and tides, the event underscores Mumbai\u2019s enduring role as India\u2019s maritime heart \u2014 one that bridges the nation\u2019s economic ambitions with the global economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
