In a large-scale crackdown on money laundering linked to narcotics, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday raided eight places in Mumbai linked to suspected drug peddlers Faisal Shaikh and Alfiya Faisal Shaikh. The raids were executed under PMLA provisions, 2002, as part of an ongoing investigation into a multi-crore hawala and drug smuggling network functioning throughout India and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ED probe is based on a previous Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) case in which Alfiya and Faisal Shaikh were apprehended for operating an international drug syndicate allegedly smuggling narcotics on dark web platforms as well as encrypted communication platforms. We are monitoring closely all transactions of the accused and their network.” He further stated that the raids revealed a “sophisticated mechanism of laundering” that was dependent on digital anonymity and cross-border coordination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This new development mirrors the heightened priority of Indian enforcement bodies on the nexus between money laundering and narcotics smuggling. As cryptocurrencies and encrypted payment pathways become more popular with traffickers, governments are increasing surveillance and working with international agencies to stem cross-border money laundering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sources also indicated that the ED is working in liaison with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-India) and Interpol to detect possible foreign beneficiaries of the network. Further arrests are anticipated as the investigation widens beyond Mumbai to locations like Hyderabad and Dubai, where connected operations are feared to be in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Faisal Shaikh and Alfiya Faisal Shaikh are presently in judicial custody on charges of narcotics trafficking, tax evasion, and FEMA violation. Today’s action by the ED is a significant step towards unearthing the financial support system of their supposed criminal network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The raids are all part of an overall crackdown by Indian officials on drug-money laundering rings in key metropolitan centers.
