This was confirmed by Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, who declared that the function would not be held on the set date.

Reasons for the Delay

The primary factor contributing to the delay is the adverse weather conditions brought about by the ongoing monsoon season. Heavy rainfall has not only impacted the region’s infrastructure but also posed challenges to the completion of final preparations at the airport site. Officials have emphasized the importance of ensuring all safety protocols and operational systems are fully functional before the inauguration. Consequently, the inauguration has been rescheduled to October 30, 2025.

Effect on Airlines and Operations

In spite of the delayed inauguration, airlines are going ahead with their plans of starting operations from NMIA. Air India Express has stated that it would operate 40 daily flights during the first phase, covering 15 domestic cities. This is anticipated to rise to 55 daily departures with a maximum of 5 international flights by mid-2026. Likewise, IndiGo intends to launch 36 domestic flights, going up to 158 flights (14 of them international) by November. Akasa Air intends to start with 15 daily flights, increasing to 40, including 8-10 international flights, by summer 2026.
The Times of India

Future Prospects

After it is fully functional, NMIA is expected to facilitate 90 million passengers and 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo every year. NMIA is being constructed in phases with five phases in all, of which Phase 1 has been planned to facilitate 20 million passengers and facilitate 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo each year. NMIA’s completion is expected to reduce the pressure on the current Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport as well as improve connectivity for the region.
The Times of India

Conclusion

The delay in the opening of NMIA is unfortunate, but it reflects the determination of the authorities to ensure the readiness and safety of the airport before it becomes operational. The new inauguration date of October 30, 2025, is a turning point in the aviation infrastructure development in Mumbai. As the region keeps picking up from the monsoon period, stakeholders are hopeful about the contribution that NMIA will have towards both domestic and overseas air travel.

The highly anticipated launch of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), which was originally set to take place on September 30, 2025, has been rescheduled because of the ongoing monsoon rains that hit the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the Konkan region.
